EUrArt is a working group seeking to transcend national boundaries with art in order to make European art more inclusive and representative.

Given the current superdiverse background of Europe, its art needs to both acknowledge and represent the diversity of artists regarding their different origins, genders, religions and lifestyles. Therefore, instead of looking at the arts from elitist national framework, this working group extends the paradigm of European art to all sections of society. Only by including overlooked artists can the true universality of art and its ability to bridge societies be acknowledged.

Call for passionate members!

Do you have a passion for heritage and the arts? Are you tired of the rigid and elitist paradigm of ‘European’ art that neglects the current diverse spectrum of the arts and artists? Do you want to be involved in a project that seeks to challenge the dominant narrative about what European art is? Then you are in luck because ‘EUrArt’ is currently looking for new members!

Open positions

Depending on your personal background, experience and interests, tasks can range from academic to practical. Current available positions include:

  • Researcher in the field of art history to create a holistic picture of European art throughout the course of history that transcends the current elitist canon. While taking a critical approach, tasks include the publication of research papers and contributions to the final report.
  • Local networker, who regularly visits different events to get in touch with upcoming artists and as such establishes a large network. In addition to organising local events such as exhibitions, this position also entails qualitative research and the documentation of  findings in the form of written reports.
  • Social media correspondence responsible for the virtual representation of EUrArt, which includes but is not limited to the promotion of projects and regular progress posts.
  • Videographer tasked with the shooting and editing of video portraits and combining them into a coherent documentary.
  • Funding coordinator for the working group as a whole and sub-projects in specific. This position comprises the establishment and maintenance of close relations with funding partners for upcoming projects.

Requirements

  • Although specific tasks differ per position, all members of the working group are required to be available for at least 1-2 Skype meetings per month.
  • It is of utmost importance that applicants are committed to the project for which they ought to work autonomously and in a team towards a common goal (approximately 5-8 hours per week).
  • Positions are open for applications by students as well as young professionals from across Europe and beyond.
  • Although an educational background related to (art) history, museum studies, heritage studies or cultural studies is advantageous, we encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply as long as they possess enthusiasm and a personal drive to become part of EUrArt.

Our Members

 Cindy

Cindy is the 2017-2018 EST Editor-in-Chief and currently finalizes her Bachelor in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the University of Amsterdam. She was born in the Netherlands, raised in Africa and Germany, lived in the United States and returned to the Netherlands for her studies. Due to her multicultural and interdisciplinary background, Cindy is specifically interested in the role of the EU as a vital international player and its influence on regional politics in the Middle East. On a European scale, one of her main concerns is the current rise of xenophobia, which she also expresses through her art. This passion for the arts and social justice in Europe has led Cindy to co-found the working group EUrArt. With this project she hopes to put a more diverse spin on the art paradigm of Europe for more representation both regarding artists and art forms.

Chaima

Chaima has completed a minor in Middle Eastern studies and studies Cultural Heritage at the moment. She is interested in decolonization, inclusion and diversity in Europe. After her bachelor degree, she wants to specialize in diversity and heritage, specifically in the Middle East. Outside of university Chaima is a board member of the ‘Nakba museum: Palestinian center for culture, history and education’, a project member of the exhibition ’50 years migration from Morocco’ from EMCEMO, and is working as a mentor at the Tropical Museum.

Chaima is a co-founder of EUrArt and is currently trying to master the Arabic language and cooking.

Mia

Mia was born in Germany, but grew up mostly in the United States and later studied at a fine arts conservatory. Afterward, she moved to Amsterdam where she is currently pursuing a degree at the University of Amsterdam Law School. Craving a creative outlet and understanding the importance of art as a form of expression and human connection, Mia joined the research group in the hope of learning more about Europe’s dynamic art scene and helping to give a voice to the artists pushed aside by the mainstream.

Stefania

Stefania​ ​is​ ​a​ ​member​ ​of​ ​the​ ​UNESCO​ ​Youth​ ​Committee​ (Italy)​ ​and​ ​is​ ​leading the​ ​UNESCO-Edu​ ​project​, a ​national​ ​training​ ​program​ ​for​ ​high​ ​schools​. This project collaborates with ​EDUU,​ a program for ​education​ ​and​ ​cultural​ ​heritage​ ​enhancement​ ​in​ ​Iraq​.​ ​For​ ​this​ ​last​ ​project​ ​she​ ​joined​ ​a​ ​mission​ ​to​ ​Iraq​ ​in​ ​January​ ​2018​ ​as​ ​part of​ ​the​ ​panel​ ​for​ ​the​ ​conference​ ​“Community​ ​building​ ​initiatives​ ​for​ ​cultural​ ​heritage enhancement”.

As​ ​a​ ​former​ ​Program​ ​Development​ ​Intern​ ​at​ ​the​ ​United​ ​Nations​ ​Human​ ​Settlements​ ​Program ​in​ ​New​ ​York​ ​HQ,​ Stefania ​is​ ​engaged​ ​in​ ​fostering​ ​the​ ​successful​ ​implementation of​ ​the​ ​recently-established​ ​Sustainable​ ​Development​ ​Goals​ ​(Agenda​ ​2030)​ ​in​ communities​ ​world-wide​.​ ​

Adam

Adam obtained his Master of Arts degree from Universiteit Utrecht in Art and Society. He is also holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Fine Art, Anthropology, and Art History. The research topics Adam focuses on include creative cities and arts activism. His project with EUrArt asks how social activism and creative interventions challenges social identity, public dialogue, and political discourse. Furthermore, what policies should be in place to enhance the these democratic and participatory experiences.

As of Spring 2018 he was accepted into Winchester School of Art for his Ph.D research into creative city development.

Isabella

Isabella is an Italian bachelor student of European Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She is majoring in European law and has a particular interest in Cultural Heritage law. Thus she considers EUrArt as the best opportunity to research on the topic and exchange with other members ideas and concerns. After her graduation she plans to further deepen her knowledge in law as her goal for the future is to work in a legal-international environment dealing with culture-related matters.

Despoina

Despoina  practices law in Athens, Greece. She holds both an LL.B. and LL.M in specialized public law from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an LL.M. in specialized public law from the University Montesquieu – Bordeaux IV in France. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in public law specializing in the right to education in relation to system of Government. Besides, she is an eight times nationwide distinguished poet. As a EUrArt researcher, she contemplates the enjoyment of the freedom of art as a positive obligation of the States and the EU.
